Emissions Research & Measurement Division,
Environmental Technology Centre

The ERMD is a division of the Canadian federal
government which for over two decades has had a lead role in measuring and analyzing air
quality and exhaust emissions. The team of engineers, chemists and technologists - based at
the department's centre of technical expertise for air quality issues-conducts laboratory
and field studies of air pollution originating from mobile and stationary sources. A key
focus of the group is to support the research and development of new technologies which
help reduce pollution. The majority of this work has been in collaboration with industry
and has included:
- alternative and reformulated fuels for light duty passenger cars and trucks
- alternative fuels and after-market exhaust emissions control equipment for on-road heavy
duty vehicles
- electric and hybrid vehicles, both light- and heavy-duty
- laboratory and field testing of off-road heavy duty vehicles such as locomotive engines
and construction equipment
- characterization of exhaust emissions from light-duty vehicles and heavy duty trucks and
buses
- onboard marine vessel diesel engine propulsion system exhaust emissions analysis
- outboard marine engine exhaust emissions testing and two- and four-stroke utility engine
exhaust emissions evaluations
- field measurements of exhaust emissions from aircraft engines
Stationary emission sources also play a key role in the pollution burden. The Source
Measurement Section undertakes activities in support of departmental issues such as
atmospheric change, toxics, compliance and enforcement and the greening of technologies.
Some of the activities include:
- emissions characterization from sources such as: incinerators, boilers, kilns and
smelters;
- measurement and characterization of greenhouse gases and organic emissions from
municipal landfills
- evaluation of process control technologies
The ERMD is involved in a number of programs that support government guidelines and
regulations. These include
- quality assurance/quality control
- development of Reference Methods
- advice and assessment
- compliance for new vehicles and
stationary sources

Technology Centre's website at www.etcentre.org or contact one of the staff directly.
