Cleaning the Air in Canadian Cities - Transportation is one of the largest sources of air pollution
and greenhouse gases in Canada, particularly in urban areas. Large, heavy-duty vehicles such
as buses and trucks use diesel engines, a significant contributor to emissions of particulate matter,
nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons – all of which are hazardous to human health.
