Emergency Preparedness and Response
Research - Development - Application
The Western Office of ESTD is responsible for a national program of research, development and technology
transfer on the behaviour, persistence and cleanup of oil on shorelines, the evaluation of oil spill
countermeasures and the environmental fate, effects and toxicity of spilled substances in general.
Our primary role is to develop scientific and operational knowledge, practices and technologies to prepare
for response to spills and environmental emergencies. In addition we provide specialized technical advice
in actual spill operations.
The majority of projects are co-funded or conducted in collaboration with international governments,
other agencies or private sector companies. Certain activities are wholly funded by clients on a cost
recovery basis or wholly funded by internal resources.
